A few months ago, artist, writer, and certified incredible human Emmy Vye created a zine for an LABRC conference called, “I just wanted to grow tomatoes.” When I saw it, I was blown away, and I immediately noticed similarities between our aristic sensibilities (it also called to mind the hand-drawn-finger-painted EP cover I made for headphones recommended in college). After a few conversations, we decided to use the zine as the source material for our very first creative collaboration.
I was (and am) still learning the ins and outs of Da Vinci Pro Resolve, but I knew I could, at the very least, sequence the images, create a score, and add text when/if necessary. But once I started to sequence the images, I fell down a rabbit hole. I found myself twisting digital switches and making the images move and mutate in ways I didn’t know were possible. Near the end, on the brink of exhaustion, I wrote all the music in one sitting (about 90 minutes. I do not recommend working this way, but alas, it happens). The entire process took about four days.
I don’t want to spoil anything, so please take a look below and let us know what you think (and if you like it, please share this post!). The film roughly 8 minutes long, but it flies by when you watch it.
Also, be sure to watch it in HD (click the little gear widget in the bottom right corner to make sure it says 1080p HD). Headphones also provide another layer of experience, as there are occasional moments of ear candy.
Enjoy!
